The Christmas season has a way of bringing back memories of family and friends whose presence through the years has become part of the spirit of the season. Though some connections may grow distant, the laughter and love we shared remain gifts we carry forward.

This year, when I sent a photo of my tree to my best friend in Florida, my “sister”, she replied, “the tree is awesome with all those memories.” She noticed the decorations my children made a long time ago, and she was right. Every ornament carries a story, artwork from my children, special ornaments from friends and family, and pieces my daughter created to celebrate my grandchildren. The sparkle of the lights brings to life the memories behind every ornament.

One of the most treasured pieces is the crèche my mother passed down to me, purchased more than 60 years ago at G. Fox, now Macy’s. It’s more than a decoration, it’s a reminder of childhood moments, her love, her faith, and the values shared across generations. And then there are the friends we may not see as often anymore. Their laughter, their gifts, and the moments we shared remain part of the season.

For many, this time of year also brings an ache for loved ones who are no longer with us. If you find yourself missing your mother, father, or someone dear, may the memories they left behind bring comfort and light. The lessons they passed down, the faith they lived, and the love they gave are still alive in us, warming our hearts and reminding us that we carry them always.

At the heart of all these memories, we are reminded of the true reason we celebrate Christmas, the birth of Jesus. The greatest gift of all, a gift of hope and love. His birth is the foundation of faith carried through generations, and the light that continues to shine even in our darkest moments.

Christmas is not only about what we see on the tree, but about the unseen gifts of memory, friendship, faith, and above all, the joy of Christ’s birth that continues to guide and inspire us.
